Ism is a belief accepted as authoritative by some group or school, or individual. I am presenting to the reader the Isms of a four-year-old, five pound, female Chihuahua, named Piglet. She truly represents the meaning of man’s best friend. Demure in size, yet filled with big love, and a big heart, she has an uncanny way of making all those who meet her feel uniquely special and important. She calmly entices one with her love and tenderness. She has depths of wisdom emanating from her large brown eyes, and a tender pink nose, that gives her a baby like face. You will laugh as you see her ears in full alert mode, as they appears to be twice her body size.

Piglet meanders through the day taking the world in, observing, stretching, and peacefully listening to the serenity of life. She lives in an environment with statues of Buddha, and an outside garden, with bamboo, flower gardens, water and more Buddhas. She meditates on white couches to relax on and gather her thoughts and her isms of simple wisdom. When the reader opens a page from the book, in it will be discovered a photo of Piglet, and underneath, a simple statement of truth, positivity, kindness, and joy. The idea is to elevate your thoughts and go about your day with a sense of well being and learning to be happy in simplicity. Even if it’s a fleeting moment, Piglet would like to give us the opportunity to take time in our busy lives and smile for a moment. This charming dog will surely bring a warm feeling to the reader, and hopefully a big smile.

As a former commercial and fashion model, Wendy had the chance to travel the world. She drew from those travels the skills that led to the creation of a clothing line for women, which were offered in various boutiques all over the country. As a writer, she transcends her worldly thoughts and feelings into her book, Isms of Piglet, via a five-pound Chihuahua’s musings on life. Wendy Lane grew up in Phoenix, Arizona. At age 18, she began her wanderlust and moved to Hawaii, starting her worldly odyssey of travels to such places as New York, Milan, Spain, and China, which provides some inspiration for her book. She lived on and off in Los Angeles for over twenty years. Her admirations of her four children’s journey through life add contributory observations as revealed through Piglet’s Isms. She has a great love for animals. Her belief is that all animals should be treated as loving creatures, and strongly urges others to rescue animals from shelters, pounds, and adoption groups. Fifo 50 States by Hayley Rose is an excellent tool for teaching children about the 50 states. Information pertaining to each state is included in a poem, as well as the state bird, flower and tree. This small book also teaches the state capital and the state number. The rhythm will help the child to learn the information. The illustration contains clues to something for which the state is well known. At the bottom of the page with the poem is the state motto.

I’ll use Kentucky as an example of the information offered for each state. Kentucky was the fifteenth state, and Frankfort is the capital. The state flower is goldenrod, and the state tree is the yellow poplar tree. The state bird is the red bird, also known as the Cardinal. The state motto is United We Stand and Divided We Fall. The illustration shows a horse because Kentucky is famous for fast horses. The illustration also shows the state bird. Tobacco and coal are the main crops. Daniel Boone National Forest is located in the eastern part of the state. The state is well known for Fort Knox where all the national gold reserves are hidden.

Hayley Rose offers teachers and parents a tool to utilize in making learning fun. I was excited when I received this book to review. Learning should be fun, and Rose has created an excellent way that children can relate to. We need more books of this caliber for our children. The amount of information stored in this small book is amazing. I shared Fifo with my grandson. Maddix loved the bear and the poetry held his attention. He asked me to read it again; that’s how I judge a book to be worthy of my shelves.

The Funny Side of Autism is the first book of its kind to focus on the positive side of an otherwise dark diagnosis.

Extreme literal thinking often makes it difficult for children with autism to grasp the concept of everyday figures of speech or to reproduce socially acceptable behaviors. However, those excessively literal interpretations can give rise to many funny moments. Those unintentionally hilarious experiences are the focus of this book.

Lisa Masters’ goal in writing this book is twofold. She feels it is important to show a side of autism that is hardly, if ever, portrayed; and two, to maintain public awareness by teaching people how children with autism think.

Lisa Masters is a single mother of two boys diagnosed with autism. She graduated from the State University of New York at Albany with a major in psychology. This is an incredible story about a bomber crew shot down in enemy territory. The crewmembers made a heroic run for freedom, a run that bonded them in life and death. Their implausible run covered several hundred miles. They walked over the steep mountains of Yugoslavia, through the German-held valleys of a dangerous land divided into vicious guerrilla warfare.

Bands of guerrillas fought for their own causes; it was impossible to tell the enemy from a friend. Their marathon ended thirty-four days after they were shot down over Steyr, Austria. There were days of starvation, exhaustion, snow, sunshine and lice. Some of them made it through despite impossible odds.

Others did not. None of them knew their fate as they made their way through a land of people who spoke a language that they could not understand.

This is a story that recounts human tragedy and captures the triumph of the human spirit.

About the Author: Award winning author, Nikos Ligidakis, born and raised in Greece, came to America in 1969, at the age of twenty-four.

While in America, he began to write with clarity and passion in an ardent voice for all people everywhere who find themselves called to join in the eternal struggle for life and freedom.
In his popular book, The Heroes Of My Thoughts, Ligidakis has written a warm and loving tribute to his life long heroes, his parents. As a child I had a desire to understand things. My curiosity led me to stick my ear in conversations of the elders who had gathered in my father's taverna. They spoke with wisdom about traditional people and ways of life that made sense later in life, as I started reading books, the images of people who became great teachers fascinated me and intrigued my imagination. I wanted to understand and learn more about the names which impressed me. I read and heard about people from different times and places; the more I learned about them, the more I wanted to live in the world the way it was instead of the way it is now. Studying to build a boring career was not so intriguing to me. I was more fascinated by the elders' stories that were about real life. Working in a career and gaining prestige in society, where prestige is measured by how many possessions one has, became meaningless.

The pursuit of being a great athlete became dull once I understood that greatness is not measured by how many goals you score, how many baskets you stuff or how many people you knock down. The military was one of my biggest schooling events. It taught me so much: patriotism, responsibility, security, and yet it also taught me how to become an independent thinker. Later on, my business life was full of notoriety, success, and financial rewards, but I almost always was penniless! What was it that turned me against the waves? Was it the wisdom of those wise people who made me comfortable with simplicity or was it the lessons from the great teachers whom society has learned to ignore because most people have surrendered to a system which helps the few and wrongs the rest?

As a young man I wanted to save the world. Many things bothered me: human rights violations, the abuse of elders, the mistreatment of children, wars and corruption. As I grew older, my spirit of those beliefs remained untamed. Only now I no longer wanted to save the world, my desire is to save the world around me: my little world around me - my family, friends, and others who were affected by my contact. If I could touch a few people in a positive way, I would serve a purpose; then they could touch someone else the same way. So that little world would multiply and who knows, maybe a few generations later we could have made a difference!

I spend a lot of time trying to understand the teachings of the people who later became my heroes. Their presence in my life has blossomed my feelings into unshaken courage enabling me to face any difficulties in my life. They brought the virtue of justice close to my heart. When I thought I had attained wisdom to the point of understanding, I would learn something new and it would humble me. Many teachers spoke of temperance. That became more noticeable in me as I grew older. Finally, there was the subject of holiness that I knew was my weakest point.

I understood that I still had much work ahead of me. At times it seemed an impossible mountain to climb. As I became older, I searched deep in my mind to find those individuals responsible for my inspirations. Besides the elders who affected me with their stories and the great thinkers who fascinated me in the books, there were two people who became my biggest influence - the two people who were in my life all the time - a man and a woman. They gave me birth, love, and smiles; I gave them hard times and worries. They infused me with wisdom and compassion; I supplied them with many headaches. They paved a road for me to walk on, but I complicated it with the world's maps. When they gave me all the energy they possessed, I realized how precious their gift was. As I gave them back the respect and love, I noticed the smiles and happiness on their faces. Now, I respect no one else more than them. Two traditional people whose wisdom was beyond anybody's that I had known or admired before. They never tried to save the world; their effort was to save the small world around them.
